French Republican Guard in Indochina, 1947-1954.

The French Republican Guard was initially formed
in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.
It took part in both World Wars.
From 1947 to 1954, the Republican Guard took part
in the Indochina War by sending three Marching
Legions which were assigned to the defense of
certain locations and the training of indigenous
troops. The three Legions, fielded a constant
strength of nearly 3000 men and suffered heavy
losses (more than 600 dead and 1,500 wounded)
during the conflict, which earned them the War
Cross TOE.
In 1954, the Republican Guard split into two
separate branches, the Mobile Gendarmerie and
the Paris Republican Guard.
