FRANCE: War Cross for Overseas Operations 
(TOE) with 4 star citations (1 bronze, 2 silver, 
1 gold (gilt) star).
Each bronze star denotes a citation at the level 
of the regiment/brigade while each silver one 
denotes a citation at the level of the Division.
Each gold (gilt) star represents a citation at 
the Corps level - this citation is rarely seen.
Awarded mainly (but not only) to members of 
the French Foreign Legion.
The medal was instituted in 1921 to reward 
war merit during overseas operations.
A medal for exceptional gallantry.
