Imperial Germany - Kingdom of Bavaria:
Commemorative War Cross, for participation
in the 1866 German Civil War (also known as
Austro-Prussian War).
The medal was instituted by King Ludwig II
in 1866 and was issued to all those who
participated in the War and "put themselves
in danger".
The war was fought between the German
Confederation under the leadership of the
Austrian Empire and its German allies on
one side (Bavaria, Saxony, Wurttemberg etc)
and the Kingdom of Prussia with its German
allies (Mecklenburg, Oldenburg, Anhalt,
Brunswick, Hanseatic Cities etc) and Italy on
the other.
The War resulted in Prussian dominance
over the German states.
In the Italian unification process, this is
called the Third Independence War.
