Imperial Germany - Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha:
Silver Medal of Merit of the Ducal Saxe-Ernestine
House Order - Duke Carl Eduard issue.
The Order was instituted in 1833 and the medal
was amended to this version, with the portrait
of Duke Carl Eduard, in 1905.
The medal was designed by M.v. Kawaczynski
and was issued in this form during WW1, either
to combatants for war merit (in that case with
crossed swords bar dated with the year of the
award ) or, as of this example, without bar for
meritorious services to the homeland.
This is a typical example of the 2nd version of
the medal characterized by the lack of the
designer's signature.
A very rare medal as the total population of the
Duchy was well below 250.000 inhabitants.
