Greece: Commemorative military medal for the
2nd Balkan War against Bulgaria in 1913.
With the heads of the Byzantine Emperor
Basileios II "the Bulgar Slayer"
(because of his victory against Tsar Samuel)
and Constantinos I King of the Helenes.
The medal was instituted in 1914 and is signed
by Georgios Iakovides.
In its box of issue with the Royal Coat of Arms
of the Hellenic Kingdom.
During the 1st Balkan War (1912-1913) the
Alliance of the Christian States (Greece,
Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro) of the Balkans,
managed to liberate the remaining Christian
populations of the Peninsula, from the Ottoman
Empire. The 1st Balkan War ended with the
Treaty of London but less than 1 month later
(June 1913) the Bulgarian Forces attacked the
Greek Forces North of Thessaloniki in a failed
attempt to seize the city and gain access to the
Aegean Sea.
The counter attack of the Greek Army pushed
the Bulgarian Forces deep into their own country
and under the combined attacks of Serbia,
Turkey, Montenegro and Romania, Bulgaria
forced to ask for terms.
The armistice was signed on 31 July 1913.
Bulgaria lost almost all its territorial gains
from the 1st Balkan War to Greece while the
borderline was drawn to its current position.
