Greece: Miniature of the Knight's Cross ("Silver
Cross") of the Royal Order of the Phoenix. With
Swords (Military Division) for war time military
command.
This is the 5th Class of the Order.
The Order of the Phoenix was instituted in 1926
to replace the Royal Order of George I.
Initially it was awarded (like all Orders of that
period) only to Foreigners for meritorious
services to the Greek State.
Following the restoration of the monarchy, in
1935, the Order was renamed to " Royal Order of
the Phoenix " and was amended with the addition
of the Crown and of the respective Royal cipher.
Additionally, Greek citizens could ever since
qualify for the award as well.
The Order is still in use today (without crown)
for outstanding military merit and also for merit
in the fields of arts, letters,
science, commerce, industry and public life.
This example is a King George II issue (1935-
1947), was awarded to officers for merit while
commanding military units during WW2
operations.
The Crosses of the Military Division are scarce in
all grades.
