Italy: WW1 Commemorative Medal of the Armored
Cruiser RN Amalfi (a Pisa-class cruiser).
In bronze, dated 1909.
The medal was circulated in commemoration of
the completion of the ship in 1909.
Obverse: RN Amalfi, 1909.
Reverse: The Coat of Arms of the City of Amalfi.
Inscribed: "Civitas Amalfia" (City of Amalfi)
The Pisa-class was a group of 3 armored cruisers
built in the 1900s: The RN Pisa and RN Amalfi
were built for the Italian Navy (Regia Marina). The
3rd ship of the class was RHN Georgios Averof, a
modified Pisa class cruiser, a legendary ship of
the Royal Hellenic Navy - the only ship of this
type still in existence (decommissioned in 1952
but reinstated on active duty in 1984 as a museum
ship at the Naval Tradition Park in Faliro, Athens).
RN Amalfi was completed in 1909.
She took part in the Italo-Turkish War of 1911–12
(provided naval gunfire support for the Italian
Army in Libya and bombarded the defenses of
the Dardanelles).
She served during WW1 and was torpedoed and
sunk on 07 Jul. 1915 by the Austro-Hungarian
submarine U-22 (actually the German submarine
U-14 flying the A-H flag) while returning from a
"show of force" patrol near the main Austrian
naval base at Pola.
A scarce medal.
