Italy: WW2 Commemorative Medal of the 4th
Alpine Regiment Battalion "Saluzzo", 22nd
Company of the Italian Army.
Silver hallmarked "800", on its original leather
ribbon.
Obverse: St Bernardo of Mentone, Protector of
the Alpine Troops.
The 4th Alpini Regiment was formed on Nov. 1,
1882.
It participated in the WW1 and saw heavy fighting
in the Alps against the Austrian Kaiserjäger and
the German Alpenkorps.
On Sep.10, 1935 the 4th Alpini together with the
3rd Alpini and the 1st Mountain Artillery Regiment
formed the 1st Alpine Division "Taurinense" and
participated, in 1936, in the Italian campaign of
Abyssinia.
In 1940 the regiment as part of the Taurinense
Division fought in the Italian attack on Greece.
After the German invasion of Yugoslavia the
Taurinense Division performed garrison duties in
Montenegro were the Regiment was disbanded
following the signing of the Italian Capitulation on
Sep. 8, 1943. Most of its soldiers joined the Italian
Partisan Brigade Garibaldi, which operated in
central Yugoslavia.
A scarce medal.
