Norway: WW2 Participation Medal (widely known
as "Narvik Medal"), 1940 – 1945.
With rosette on the ribbon for a 2nd award of the
medal (the maximum number of subsequent
awards was 3, denoted by equal rosettes on the
ribbon - the medal however was awarded only
once).
Mounted on wearing clip, marked J. Tostrup (in
Oslo).
Obverse: the Norwegian Coat of Arms
circumscribed 9 Apr.1940- 8 May 1945.
Reverse: Inscribed: "DELTAGER I KAMPEN"
(Participant in Battle)
The medal was instituted in 1945 and was
awarded to both Norwegian and Allied military
and civilians who participated in the defensive
operations following the German invasion of
9 April 1940 (battle of Narvik)or served in the
Norwegian Armed Forces or aboard vessels of
the Merchant Navy during WW2.
The medal is also known as the "Narvik medal"
as it was awarded to the participants of the 2
Battles of Narvik. The Battles of Narvik were
fought from 9 Apr. to 8 Jun. 1940 as a naval
battle in the Ofotfjord and as a land battle in the
mountains surrounding the City.
The medal is rare.
