Austro-Hungarian Empire: WW1 patriotic cap
badge with the portrait of Colonel General
Karl Baron von Pflanzer-Baltin.
Dated 1914-1916.
Maker marked by Schneider in Vienna.
Karl Baron von Pflanzer-Baltin came out of
retirement in Oct. 1914, was promoted to
General of Cavalry and was given command
of the K.u.K. VII (7th) Army that saw action
exclusively on the Eastern Front. Under his
command the K.u.K. VII (7th) Army took part
in the Carpathian Campaign, captured the city
of Czernowitz (in Ukraine) and halted the
Russian Bessarabian Offensive. In Jun. 1916
the VII Army was practically annihilated by
the Russian Brusilov Offensive.
It was reinforced by German troops and while
it nominally remained under Pflanzer-Baltin's
command, in reality it operated under the
control of the German Chief of Staff Major
General von Seeckt until its dissolution in
Apr. 1918.
In Jul. 1918 Pflanzer-Baltin took command
of the A-H Forces in Albania and led the last
successful offensive of the War by the
Central Powers. Following the Armistice
he surrendered his forces on 18 Nov. 1918.
Colonel General Karl Baron von Pflanzer-
Baltin died in Vienna in 1925, having earned
the nick name "Now Here, Now There" for
his rapid movement of forces in battle.
