Belgium: WW1 Maritime Decoration, Gold (Gilt) Cross, I Class, with
Crossed Anchors.
With the Royal Cypher of King Albert.
The medal was established in 1918, in 5 classes. It was awarded to
seamen aboard Belgian Ships for distinguished outstanding
wartime service, at seas.
At the outbreak of WWI, Belgium had practically no navy. The country
assembled a small force of Destroyers just in 1917. The Belgian naval
personnel served onboard French minesweepers and provided the
gunners for Belgian merchant ships. Given the above facts the award
was issued in very limited numbers and it is very rare especially in the
senior grades.
