FRANCE: French Red Cross Medal of Recompense,
2nd type, 2nd form, Gold (gilt) Class.
In its box of issue, with the name of the recipient
(Melanie Leduc) and the date of the award (14 Sep.
1989) written on the interior of the lid and on the
reverse side of the medal (marginally visible).
The Red Cross Medal of Recompense was instituted
in 3 classes (bronze, silver and gold) in 1940.
This is the 2nd type, 2nd form of the award, issued
since 1950 to participants of the Colonial Wars and
posterior conflicts.
The French Red Cross was officially established in
1940 following the merger of the Union of French
Women, the French Society of Aiding the Wounded
and the Association of French Women.
The Cross is rare.
