FRANCE: WW1 Commemorative medal for the
Veterans of the 2 Battles of the Marne River
(1914 & 1918 respectively).
On officer's bar.
The medal was established in 1937, by the
Association of the Soldiers of the Marne River.
President of the Association was Marshal
Franchet d’Espérey (the French Marshal of the
Allied Armies based in Salonica - Greece, who
conducted successfully the assault that broke
the Central Powers defensive lines at the
Southern Front).
The medal was designed by the sculptor
Maxime Real del Sarte.
During the 1st Battle of the Marne (Sep. 1914)
the French supported by the British Army,
through the massive recruiting effort and the
fast deployment of the fresh soldiers to the
front, using every available means of transpor-
ration managed to stop the German advance
and started the changing of the war tide.
The 2nd Battle of the Marne (Jul. - Aug. 1918)
was the last major German offensive on the
Western Front during WW1. The attack failed
when an Allied counterattack by French and
American forces, including several hundred
tanks, overwhelmed the Germans on their
right flank, inflicting severe casualties.
The German defeat marked the start of the
relentless Allied advance which culminated
in the Armistice with Germany about 100
days later.
