France: WW1 patriotic medal for the support
of the War Effort, in honor of General Joseph
Simon Gallieni, following his death on May 27,
1916.
Obverse: The portrait of General Gallieni.
Reverse: Dated "1914 - 1916" (the period he
remained in the office of initially Military
Governor of Paris and later Minister of War).
Inscribed "Jusqu’au bout" (to the end), from
his speech to the citizens of Paris following
his appointment as Military Governor of
Paris: “I have received the mandate to defend
Paris against the invader. I will fulfill this
mandate to the end."
The medal is signed by August Maillard and
marked by the Paris School of Art (Paris-Art).
