FRANCE: Bronze Medal for the French Families.
Obverse: A mother and child circumscribed
"FAMILLE FRANÇAISE" (French Family),
signed by Leon Deschamps.
Reverse: "LA PATRIE RECONNAISSANT"
(The country recognizes), circumscribed
"REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE MINISTERE DE
L’HYGIENE" (French Republic, Ministry of
Hygiene), signed by Leon Deschamps Fecit.
The medal was instituted in 1920 as a measure
to encourage women in raising numerous
children given that France had suffered severe
losses in the Great War that had ended just 2
years ago.
The bronze medal was awarded to mothers of
5 children.
This is a rare early example of the medal that
was ordered by the Ministry of Hygiene - later
issues were awarded by the "Ministère de la
Santé Publique" (Ministry of Public Health)
and bare the respective inscription, instead
of "Ministère de l’Hygiene".
