Big Bertha is the name of a type of super-heavy
howitzer developed by Krupp on the eve of WW1.
The howitzer was mainly designed by Professors
Fritz Rausenberger and Max Dreger.
A total of 12 guns were produced but only 2 were
available at the outbreak of WW1.
The guns were used to destroy the Belgian forts
at Liege, Namur, and Antwerp, and the French fort
at Maubeuge.
The most spectacular success was against the
Fort Loncin (near Liege) which exploded after
taking a direct hit to its ammunition magazine.
The medal is rare.
