The Regiment was initially raised by the Cape
Colony Government in 1855 as the "Frontier
Armed and Mounted Police". In 1878 it was
renamed "Cape Mounted Riflemen" and in
1913 it was incorporated into the new Union
Defense Force as the "1st South African
Mounted Riflemen".
In WW1 the 1st SAMR fought in the German
South-West Africa campaign (1914–1915).
It was disbanded in 1926.
The 1914-15 Star was instituted in 1918 and
was awarded for service in any theater of
operations between 5 Aug. 1914 and 31 Dec.
1915 provided that the recipient had not
already been awarded the 1914 Star.
