Commemorative Campaign medal for the
Battle of the Atlantic.
The medal was instituted in 1945.
It was awarded to subjects of the British
Commonwealth for service in the WW2
Battle of the Atlantic Ocean, the longest
continuous campaign of the war.
The Theater of Operations included the
Atlantic and South Ocean, the Home Waters
and the North Russia Convoys.
The Battle of the Atlantic was conducted
mainly against Admiral Doenitz' U-Boots, the
German Navy (Kriegsmarine) and the
Luftwaffe.
On behalf of Great Britain the medal was
awarded to members of the Royal Navy, of the
Merchant Marine as well as to Airmen aboard
Navy Vessels.
The clasp was awarded to those who
subsequently became entitled to the France
and Germany Star (which couldn't be
awarded to recipients of the Atlantic Star).
