The medal was awarded to British and 
Commonwealth personnel for a minimum of 
28 days of service in the Armed Forces or the 
Merchant Navy (for service at sea only) for at 
least 28 days between 3 Sep.1939 and 2 Sep. 
1945. 
Foreign subjects commissioned or enlisted 
into British or Commonwealth Forces, who 
did not receive a similar award to the War 
Medal 1939–1945 from their own Countries, 
were also eligible for the award.
The medal was instituted in 1945.
