Greece: Cross of Military Valor 1st Class, for
Officers.
Silver, gilt and enameled.
Only 13.068 1st Class Crosses were ever
awarded (9585 1st Class Crosses were
awarded during the period 1913 - 1922, like
this example)
The Order was instituted in 1913 right after
the end of the Balkan Wars in 3 Classes.
It was awarded for Military Valor during the
Balkan Wars, WW1 and during the Disastrous
Campaign in Asia Minor (1922).
It was discontinued in 1923 and it was
re-instituted in 1940 with the addition of the
"1940" clasp on the ribbon.
The medal depicts St. Georgios (George)
slaying the Dragon and on the reverse side
writes "ΑΞΙΑ = Valor".
It is the highest military merit award of
Greece (it is still in use without the crown) and
it ranks as an Order.
