SPAIN: Military Decoration for the Members of the
Spanish Blue Division in the Soviet Union (Russia).
In the form of the Spanish Eagle, with the Spanish
Crown on the top and the Nazi swastika in the
center, inscribed "Rusia (Russia) 1941" under the
image of the Kremlin on the reverse.
The medal was instituted in 1943.
The Spanish Blue Division was formed in Jun.
1941. Its formation reflected the decision of
General Franco's Regime to to support the
German invasion of Russia both in gratitude for
the German assistance during the Spanish Civil
War and also in order to combat Communism at
its nest.
The members of the Blue Division, all of them
were volunteers, were officially enlisted into the
German Army while the Division was a German
Unit (250th Infantry Division) hence its formation
didn't affect the neutrality of Spain.
The Division fought solely on the Eastern Front
from Aug. 1941 until Oct. 1943, when the Spanish
Government ordered its withdrawal.
Approximately 45.000 Spanish served on the
Eastern Front, with significant impact on the
operations as most of them were Veterans of the
Spanish Civil War or members of the Spanish
Regular Army.
The Spanish casualties in the Russian campaign
are estimated to 5000 KIA and 8700 wounded.
A very fine example.
