Ottoman Empire (Turkey): Silver Medal of Glory, or
Danube Campaign Medal or Turkish General Service
Medal.
Unnamed as issued.
Obverse: The tughra of Sultan Abdulmecid I (also
known as Abdul Mejid I). Dated AH1270 (1853AD).
Reverse: Inscribed in Arabic letters "Nishani Iftihar"
(Order of Glory).
The medal was instituted in 1853 by Sultan Abdul
Mejid I and was awarded for participation in the
Danube Campaign, a prelude of the Crimean War.
It was also awarded to participants of other
campaigns where no specific campaign medals
were struck. The medal is therefore sometimes
referred to as the General Service Medal or
Danube Medal.
An early example on rarely seen original ribbon
for "General Services".
