The Cross was instituted in 1915 (in 2 forms: with
and without oak leaf wreath) by Grand Duke
Ferdinand II, to be awarded to volunteers, women
or men who rendered outstanding services in
tending the sick and wounded.
This example with oak leaf wreath was awarded
for services provided on the front.
This type of the Cross is extremely rare.
