Science and Art, Chest Badge of the Cross of 
Honor 1st Class with the respective ribbon lapel 
pin.
In its box of issue by Anton Reitterer in Vienna, 
inscribed "LITTERIS ET ARTIBUS" (Latin for: 
Science and Art) on the lid.
The same inscription is found on the central 
medallion of the Cross.
The Decoration of Honor for Science and Art was 
instituted in 1955, in 3 Classes and it is the 
highest federal award of the Austrian Republic 
for scientific or artistic achievements.  
The  Cross of Honor 1st Class represents the 
2nd Class of the Decoration and is awarded to 
Austrian or Foreign citizens "who have 
distinguished themselves through recognized 
achievements and have earned merit in their 
scientific or artistic field.”
A scarce award.
