FINLAND: Order of the Cross of Liberty, Cross of
Mourning with Swords, 1939.
A posthumous award to those who were killed
during active military service. The Cross was
presented to the closest relative of a soldier killed
in action.
The Order was established in 1918 during the
Independence War of Finland.
The number "1939" shows the year of the award.
The Order of the Cross of Liberty is a premier
Order of Finland and it was awarded (until 1960)
for merit during war time active service.
This example was issued during the Winter War
of 1939 against the Soviet Union.
As the war only lasted from 30 Nov. 1939 until
13 March 1940, the 1939 Crosses are quite rare.
