Kingdom of Romania: Commemorative Medal
for the 50th Anniversary of the inauguration
of the Royal Castle at Peles.
Signed by Ion Jelea (1887-1983)
Obverse: The portraits of Kings Carol I,
Ferdinand and Carol II circumscribed:
"50 Years Since the Founding of Peles Castle
at Sinaia"
Reverse: Patriotic poem by the Romanian
poet Vasile Alecsandri:
"I, Carol, myself, and my people have built
together, having one intention and love, my
kingdom in times of war, my castle in times
of peace".
The medal was instituted on 16 Aug. 1933 on
the occasion of the festivities for the 50th
anniversary of the renovation of the Royal
Castle at Peles.
It was awarded just to the members of the
Army High Command, the Sinaia Garrison
and to holders of the Order of Michael the
Brave, 1st Class and the Medal of Military
Virtue, 1st Class.
In total just 600 medals were awarded, hence
this is a very rare award.
The site of Peles Castle was bought by the
future King Carol I in 1875.
The castle was completed in 1883 and it
served as the Royal Summer Residence until
the fall of the Monarchy.
The castle was seized by the Communist
regime in 1948 and it was returned to King
Mihai in 2006.
Subsequently the Romanian Government
bought back the castle and turned it into the
Peles National Museum.
