Austria - 1st Republic: Decoration of Honor for
Services to the Austrian Republic, VIII Class,
Gold Merit Badge, 1924 - 1930 (or Order of Merit
of the 1st Austrian Republic, Gold Merit Badge,
XI Class, 1930-1938).
The Decoration of Honor for Services to the
Austrian Republic was initially instituted in 1922
as the premier military award of the 1st Austrian
Republic.
It could also be awarded to non-Austrian citizens.
Following three subsequent amendments, in the
period 1924-26, the structure of the Order was
organized in 7 Classes and 3 Medals and in 1930
in 14 Classes and 2 Medals.
The Gold Merit Badge as of this example was
introduced in 1924 and was awarded to Warrant
Officers (Vizeleutnant).
The Order was restructured once again in 1934
and its name changed to Austrian Order of Merit.
While the award criteria, the statues and the
classes changed the Crosses and Medals
remained the same and so did the rank of the
recipients.
The award was abolished in 1938 following the
annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany.
