The cap badge features the flags of the Central 
Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman 
Empire, Bulgaria).
At the outbreak of WW1 Italy initially declared 
neutrality, despite being a member of the Triple 
Alliance alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary 
since 1882. 
In 1915 however, Italy surprisingly declared war 
on Austria-Hungary, entering WW1 on the side of 
the Allies, aiming to the annexation of the 
Austrian Littoral and northern Dalmatia, Trento 
and South Tirol.
