FRANCE: WW1 badge - Insignia of the French 8th Light Infantry Battalion
(Hunters) - Sibi Brahim.
The battalion was named after the homonymous battle, in 1845, were the
Battalion together with the 2nd Squadron of the Hussars, faced almost
10.000 Berbers and fought to the last bullet.
When the ammo run out, the French bulge (hence the insignia) sounded
the charge and the 80 survivors of the Battalion tried to break through
the lines of the Berbers.
Only 16 men out of the initial 450 made it back to the French lines.
Among the dead was the French Commander Lt. Colonel Montegnac.
