During the period Feb - Apr. 1915 the Allied Forces 
landed on Gallipoli and attempted unsuccessfully 
to take control of the Dardanelles straits and 
capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople. 
The Ottoman force that successfully defended the 
straights and managed to repel the Allied invading 
force was the 5th Ottoman Army, commanded by 
the German officer Lt. General Otto Liman von 
Sanders.
