Austro-Hungarian Empire: Early WW1 patriotic 
cap badge - stickpin with the motto "Gott Mit 
Uns" (May God Be On Our Side)  and the 
portraits of Kaiser Franz Joseph and Wilhelm II. 
Dated 1914.
With the Italian flag to the obverse, as a direct 
invitation to Italy to join the war. 
In 1914 the Central Powers were still hoping that 
Italy would honor its commitment to the Triple 
Alliance and would join the War on their side.
At the outbreak of WW1 Italy initially declared 
itself neutral, despite being a member of the 
Triple Alliance alongside Germany and Austria-
Hungary since 1882. 
In 1915 however, Italy surprisingly declared war 
on Austria-Hungary, entering WW1 on the side of 
the Allies, aiming to the annexation of the 
Austrian Littoral and northern Dalmatia, Trento 
and South Tirol.
