Product Information
Specification
GREAT BRITAIN: WW1 Princess Mary's Christmas
Gift Box, 1914.
Embossed brass box that originally contained a
variety of items such as tobacco and chocolate.
The contents of the box varied for smokers, non-
smokers and nurses and also for the various
religious and minority groups whose tastes and
dietary rules had to be respected.
It was intended as a Christmas present to all
who were serving on land or at sea, at home or
abroad, to the prisoners of war and to the next
of kin of the 1914 casualties.
Distribution dragged on even beyond the
Armistice (1918) because of the difficulties in
distribution and sourcing both the brass and
the contents due to the ongoing war.
Notable is, that supplies of 45 tons of brass
strip, destined for the production of Christmas
Gift boxes, was lost in May 1915 when RMS
Lusitania was sunk off Ireland on passage
from the USA.
A number of 2.620.019 boxes were produced
in total.
Dimensions: 13cm x 8,5cm x 3cm
