The Royal Order of Saint Alexander was instituted
in 1881, by Knyaz Alexander I and was the second
highest Bulgarian order during the Kingdom of
Bulgaria.
It was awarded to both military and civilians,
Bulgarians and foreigners, with the personal
benevolence of the Bulgarian Monarch, who was
the Grand Master.
The date "19 February 1878" on the central
medallion is the independence date of Bulgaria
from the Ottoman Empire.
The Order was abolished at the end of WW2 by
the Communist regime.
