The Croatian Air Force Legion (HZL, Hrvatska
Zrakoplovna Legija) was formed in 1941. It was a
unit of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), subject
to German disciplinary regulations and wore
Luftwaffe uniforms.
Its members were volunteers drawn from the Nazi
puppet-state, the Independent State of Croatia
while many of them had previously served in the
Royal Yugoslav Air Force.
The Croatian Air Force Legion participated in the
invasion of the Soviet Union and fought on the
Eastern front until 1943 when it was absorbed by
the Croatian Air Force.
It consisted of the 4th Fighter Wing and the 5th
Bomber Wing and flew German and Italian
airplanes.
The Air Force Legion had approximately 360
officers, NCOs and men.
