Denmark: Commemorative Medal for the 1864 War
vs Prussia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, over
Schleswig Holstein.
Signed by Alphee Dubois.
The War started on 1 Feb.1864, when Prussia and
Austria-Hungary invaded Schleswig-Holstein,
following the attempt of King Christian IX to sign
a joint constitution for the Kingdom of Denmark
and the Duchy of Schleswig, action that
contradicted the terms of the agreement that
ended the 1st War of Schleswig-Holstein in
1850.
As the Danish were outnumbered, poorly trained
and equipped, the War ended with a crushing
Danish defeat, and according to the treaty that
was signed on 30 Oct. 1964, Schleswig-Holsten
came under joint administration by Prussia and
Austria-Hungary.
The Duchy was annexed by Prussia in 1866
following the German Civil War and the defeat
of Austria-Hungary.
The medal was instituted in 1875 by King
Christian IX and was awarded in 1877 to all still
living veterans of the War.
A total of 58000 medals were distributed - all
struck in Paris.
