Ethiopia: UN Service Medal.
Obverse: The emblem of the United Nations and
the inscription "United Nations Service Medal" in
Amharic characters.
The medal was established in 1980 by Mengistu
Haile Mariam, leader of Ethiopia during the Derg
era (in office: 1977-1991).
It was awarded to Ethiopian personnel that served
in international humanitarian or peacekeeping
missions under the United Nations mandate.
The Medal (with different ribbon) had also been
awarded to non-Ethiopian UN workers who
responded to the drought and famine in Ethiopia,
mainly in food, water and aid distribution, during
the 1990's.
For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the
"Famine Medal".
A scarce Derg-era military decoration.
