Finland WWII Commemorative Medal for the War of Continuation 1941 1945

FINLAND: WW2 Commemorative Medal of the War 
of Continuation (1941 - 1944) against the Soviet 
Union. 
The Continuation War started as an attempt by 
Finland to regain the territory lost at the Winter 
War and if possible to occupy Russian territory, 
taking advantage of the German invasion of 
Russia. 
Initially the Finnish operations undid the post-
Winter War concessions to the Soviet Union on 
the Karelian Isthmus and Ladoga Karelia, and 
the Finns captured East Karelia by September 
1941. On the Karelian Isthmus, the Finnish Armed 
Forces halted their offensive 30 km away from 
Leningrad, at the pre-WW2 border between the 
Soviet Union and Finland. Finnish forces did not 
participate in the siege of Leningrad directly, 
holding their pre-WW2 territory on the Karelian 
Isthmus until mid-1944, when the Soviet strategic 
counter-offensive drove the Finns from most of 
the territories they had gained. 
Following the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty, Finland 
ceded Petsamo Province to the Soviet Union, 
leased Porkkala peninsula to the Soviets but 
retained its independence.
The medal was instituted in 1957. This is the 
regular version for Finnish recipients.
