FRANCE: Silver Commemorative Medal for the
1859 Italian Campaign of Emperor Napoleon III
of France.
This is the scarce "Cent Gardes" example of
the medal, with the imperial crown.
On the obverse: Emperor Napoleon III
On the reverse: The most important battles of
the Italian Campaign (MONTEBELLO,
PALESTRO, TURBIGO, MAGENTA, MARIGNAN
and SOLFERINO).
Signed by the famous medalist Barre on both
sides (on the obverse "BARRE", on the reverse
with his sign: a small anchor).
Hallmarked for silver on the suspender on the
reverse side.
The award was established in 1859 and was
issued to the members of the Allied Armies
of Italy (France, Sardinia, United Italian
Provinces) and the men of the Fleet who
participated in the War against Austria.
The Italian Campaign of 1859 (2nd Italian War
of Independence) is considered a major step
towards the Unification of Italy.
