FRANCE: Badge of the French General Society
of Maritime Transport of Marseilles.
The company was formed in 1865 and operated
as a bulk freighter of iron ore from Bone to
Marseilles, Sete, Algiers and Oran.
Soon it expanded in offering passenger services
to South America, to the West Indies, to the Gulf
of Mexico ports and New Orleans. The company
suffered considerable losses in World War I but
managed to rebuilt their fleet.
They finally ceased operations in 1964.
