FRANCE: Colonial medal, itermediate type
(1913 - 1938), with 2 clasps (Africa and Somali
Coast 1940 -1941).
Also with officer's bar on the top of the ribbon.
Hallmarked for silver (~1~) by the Paris Mint
and signed by Georges Lemaire.
The "Africa" clasp, was instituted in Jun.
1903 and was issued to reward participants of
various exploratory missions (topographical,
scientific, geological or even political) in
Africa, during the period from 1875 to 1934
provided no other clasp was instituted for
these missions. At least 150 such expeditions
are documented.
The clasp is extremely rare.
The "Somali Coast 1940 - 1941" clasp was
instituted by the Vichy Government, in Dec.
1941, to be awarded for a minimum of 6
months meritorious service in the French
Somali Coast area which was at the time (from
25 Jun. 1940 to Mar. 1942) under blockade by
the British Royal Navy.
The clasp was annulled by the Free French
Government on 7 Jan. 1944 and it is thus
scarce.
The Colonial medal was established in 1893
and was awarded to military personnel who
operated in French protectorates and
colonies.
In total there are established 52 official and
63 unofficial bars for the colonial medal.
The award was replaced by the Overseas
Medal in 1962.
