Imperial Germany - Kingdom of Bavaria: Original 
Commemorative War Cross for participation in the 
1866 Austro-Prussian War (German Civil War). 
Instituted by King Ludwig II, it was awarded to all 
who took part in the campaign and placed 
themselves in danger. 
A historic 19th-century military decoration with 
strong collector appeal.
The war was fought between the German 
Confederation under the leadership of the 
Austrian Empire and its German allies on 
one side (Bavaria, Saxony, Wurttemberg etc) 
and the Kingdom of Prussia with its German 
allies (Mecklenburg, Oldenburg, Anhalt, 
Brunswick, Hanseatic Cities etc) and Italy on 
the other.
The War resulted in Prussian dominance 
over the German states.
In the Italian unification process, this is 
called the Third Independence War.
