Imperial Germany - Kingdom of Prussia: Steel 
Commemorative Medal for Non Combatants, 
for the Victory against France during the 
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. 
The medal was instituted in 1871 by Kaiser 
Wilhelm I. Issued to non combatants - hence 
in limited numbers compared to the bronze 
one. 
Obverse side: "Fur Pflichttreue im Kriege" 
(For Devotion to Duty During the War). 
Reverse: The Iron Cross and the years 1870 
1871. 
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 was fought 
between the 2nd French Empire and the 
German states led by the Kingdom of Prussia.
After a series of German victories (Battle of 
Sedan, Siege of Metz), Emperor Napoleon III 
was captured, the 3rd French Republic was 
declared, the French army was decisively 
defeated and the Germans besieged and 
entered Paris.
