Imperial Germany- Saxe Weimar Eisenach:
Original WW1 Decoration of Merit for Women in
Wartime from Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, featuring
the conjoined portraits of Grand Duchesses
Feodora (1915) and Maria Paulovna (1815).
Struck in zinc (wartime metal), this oval-shaped
medal honored women’s contributions during the
war. A scarce and elegant Imperial German home-
front award.
The medal was instituted in 1915 by Grand Duke
Wilhelm Ernst to be awarded to female recipients
for meritorious humanitarian services during
wartime.
Grand Duchess Feodora was patron of the Ladies
Union of the Grand Duchy of Saxony.
The Union had been founded in 1815 by Grand
Duchess Maria Paulovna to provide aid and relief
to the wounded veterans of the Napoleonic Wars.
The medal was designed by Professor Roemer, in
Munich.
It was originally intended to be produced in silver
but war related shortages led to the medal being
produced in silvered zinc alloy.
