Imperial Germany - Wurttemberg (Era of the
Weimar Republic):
WW1 Commemorative War Decoration of the
Army Veteran Association - Cross of Merit with
Swords for Combatants.
On the reverse: "Furchtlos und Treue" (Fearless
and Faithful) and in the central medallion:
"Wurttemberg War Commemorative Attestation"
The Cross was created in 1920 by the Army
Veterans Association of
Wurttemberg to be issued to its members, since
Germany had established no official Commemo-
rative Medal for the WW1 participants.
Just like almost all the Weimar Republic awards,
the Cross had to be purchased by the recipient
(only the diploma was actually awarded).
Because the Cross was quite pricey at the time,
only a few were indeed purchased, hence it is
extremely rare.
The Cross was banned during the NAZI era (in
1935).
