 M.A. CAWTHORNE No. 17098/H , with 3 Maltese 
Crosses clasps/citations. 
The medal was instituted in 1898 to be awarded 
for 15 years of service, while each clasp/citation 
denotes 5 additional years of service.
A rather rare medal.

- The WW2 Defence medal.
The medal was instituted in 1945 to recognize 
3 years of both military and some types of 
civilian services in defense of the UK during 
WW2. 
The qualifying time required depending on 
the area served was:
UK: 1080 days
Overseas non-operational: 360 days
Overseas non-operational but under threat or 
subject to air attacks: 180 days.
