Product Information
Specification
ITALY: WW1 Silver Medal "Al Valore Militare" for
Military Valor in Battle.
Rare unnamed example as issued to foreign
recipient.
This is the officially issued version of the medal,
marked with the "crowned Z" (Regia Zecca - the
mark of the Italian Royal Mint) and FG (for G.
Ferraris).
The "Al Valore Militare" medal has its origin in the
silver and gold medals for "Acts of Exceptional
Valor" which were instituted in 1833 by King Carlo
Alberto of Sardinia.
During WW1 the medal was awarded to military
personnel, units above the level of company, and
civilians for exceptional valor in the face of the
enemy.
This form of the medal with the FG and Z marks
was instituted in 1918 and was issued for acts of
valor in 1917 and 1918.
The unnamed examples of the medal are very
scarce.
