NAZI GERMANY: Von Mackensen's Gold (gilt)
Badge of Honor, 1st Class.
Issued by the Ring of Arms of the German
Cavalry - a Veteran Association of former
members of the German Cavalry Units.
The badge was instituted in this form in 1934
and was scarcely awarded until 1936 - the
exact number of the awards is not known.
Field Marshal August von Mackensen was for
the Germans an iconic cavalry leader. He was
decorated with the Pour le Merite with Oak
Leaves, the Order of the Black Eagle and the
Grand Commander of the Royal House Order
of the Hohenzollern.
During WW1 he commanded the XVII Army
Corps in East Prussia and later the 9th and
11th Army. Towards the end of the war he was
appointed Military Governor of Romania.
He had the reputation of a fearless and
undefeated military commander.
The badge is scarce.
