Iran (Persian Empire): Imperial Order of the Lion
and the Sun (later known as Order of Homayoun),
Knight's Star (V Class), Civil Division in Silver.
On the obverse: The Lion & the Sun
The Order was instituted in 1808 by Fath Ali Shah
of the Qajar Dynasty as the Royal Order of the
Sun to be awarded to foreign officials (later
extended to Persians as well) who had rendered
distinguished services to Persia.
In 1820 it was reorganized and renamed to
Imperial Order of the Lion and the Sun.
In 1925, the Qajar Dynasty was replaced by the
Pahlavi Dynasty.
The Order remained in use and continued to be
awarded as the Order of Homayoun, after being
reorganized in 5 classes and 3 medals.
This is a rare version of the Knight's Star, in
silver with pierced rays, issued in the late 19th
century.
