San Marino: Equestrian Order of Saint Agatha,
Knight's Cross.
In silver, hallmarked "800".
Obverse: The portrait of Saint Agatha with the
inscription "Sant'Agata Prottetrice" (Saint
Agatha Protector).
Reverse: The San Marino Coat of Arms with
the inscription "Bene Merenti" (Well Deserved).
The Order of Saint Agatha was established in
5 classes, in 1923 by the Grand and General
Council of the Republic of San Marino. It is
named after Saint Agatha, on whose feast
day 5 Feb., Pope Clement XII reestablished the
sovereignty of the Republic in 1740.
It is awarded to foreign nationals who have
positively contributed charitable and other
services for the benefit of the Republic.
This example is of the WW2 period.
Given the small population on San Marino
(aprox. 30.000 inhabitants) the Order is scarce
in all classes.
