Kingdom of Serbia: Serbian Red Cross, Silver
Medal of Merit for the Balkan Wars 1912-1913.
On the obverse: The emblem of the Red Cross,
the inscription in Cyrillic characters "ЗА УСЛУГЕ
СРПСКОМ ЦРВЕНОМ КРСТУ" (For Services to
the Serbian Red Cross) and the Coat of Arms of
Serbia.
On the reverse: The "Kosovo Maiden" helps a
wounded soldier next to a deat Turk following
the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 - a painting by the
Serbian artist Uros Predic (1857-1953).
The scene is based on the central figure of the
respective poem, part of the Kosovo cycle in
the Serbian epic poetry.
The Serbian Red Cross was founded in 1876 on
the initiative of Dr. Vladan Georgijevic.
The medal was instituted in 1912 to be awarded
to men and women, both Serbian and foreign,
for meritorious services in assisting the sick
and wounded of the Balkan Wars- hence it was
dated "1912-13".
This is the scarce example of the medal, by
Huguenin Freres of La Locle, Switzerland, in
silver 990, hallmarked and singed BM.
